...that the only reason I'd be interested in a Kindle-like device would be to read fanfic on it?

I like good old-fashioned books just fine and I'm not at all interested in digital versions of them. I love my iPod, don't get me wrong, but I've always had an extremely short attention span with music, so the ability to switch songs on a whim--mostly because one song reminds me of another song I'd rather be listening to--works for me. Not for books, though. No. You can't replicate that paper book smell and I certainly don't need any more encouragement to start multiple books at once. But having the option to carry some fanfics around with me without my computer sounds really cool. It'd be a way to actually read them, instead of being distracted by mindlessly surfing the web after five minutes of trying. I think I'm actually attempting to make fanfic reading more like reading a physical book, by using a technology that's making physical books less necessary. :\
