Oh, yes, you can use them for yourself. Some people want to be credited in your icon notes/keywords, but I don't really care as long as no one claims they made them. I mean, I don't mind credit, but it's certainly not necessary for me. So have fun!

What kind of software do you use to make those?

I use Photoshop, but you can use Paint Shop Pro or Gimp or something similar. I just mess around with layers and gradients and brushes.
